The Washburn Games ( www.washburngames.org) is a sports sampler where children ages 4 - 12 can try about 20 different sports activities, including cricket, rugby, football, lacrosse, baseball, golf, soccer and many more. The event raises funds and awareness for a critical community issue: children’s mental health. One out of five Minnesota children will experience mental health challenges, yet only 20% of these children will get the professional help they need. The event is designed to help families in the community realize a child’s mental health is as important as their physical health. The Washburn Games also creates awareness about Washburn Center for Children-Minnesota’s leading resource for children experiencing trauma, depression, anxiety, learning disorders or other mental health challenges.
Volunteers will staff sports stations, helping participants navigate different sports drills (no previous sports experience is necessary). For example, at the soccer station, volunteers will help children navigate an obstacle course as fast as they can, see how many times they can juggle the ball in the air and record the speed of the child’s kick with a speed gun. Volunteers cheer on participants and help set the tone for an afternoon of fun!
