ORGANIZATION: Tulsa Debate League

The Tulsa Debate League ("TDL") is seeking Volunteer Assistant Coaches from the University of Tulsa to help classroom teachers at Will Rogers Junior and Senior High School and Kendall-Whittier Elementary School teach and mentor students in academic debate. The Tulsa Debate League is a 501(c)(3) "urban debate league" whose mission is to engage and educate public school students in critical thinking through speech and debate. Volunteers commit to meet regularly and to attend tournaments during the year.

Role and responsibilities

TDL needs Volunteer Assistant Coaches who can:

  • Judge practice debates once per week;
  • Provide feedback and encouragement to students;
  • Work one-on-one with students to understand difficult literature and concepts that arise during debates;
  • Attend tournaments with students and provide coaching before debate rounds.

Qualifications

TDL needs volunteers with debate experience. The program at Rogers is a "policy" or "cross-examination" debate-style program. The program at Kendall-Whittier is "public forum" debate.

Description

The TDL is part of the growing network of urban debate leagues across the country, which exist to institutionalize debate programs in underserved, low-income schools. We partner with Tulsa Public Schools to provide funding and professional development to schools and teachers, organize competitions, and create links to college and career opportunities.
