ORGANIZATION: Friends of Great Kids Farm

  • 4 people are interested

Great Kids Farm is in need of a skilled professional or hobbyist archivist/historian. We are a 33-acre outdoor learning laboratory. Thousands of City School students utilize the farm annually to connect classroom curriculum to the world around them through experiential learning.

Our campus is also a historic site which began as the orphanage and vocational school for African American boys opened by the Reverend Bragg. In 1953 it became part of Baltimore City Schools, operating as the Bragg Nature center for many years. In the intervening years it's been a horticultural education and now Great Kids Farm - continuing to serve Baltimore City Public Schools students over the last 65 years.

There is an incredibly rich history on this land, of this place, and weaving in all the stories of the people who were residents, students, or teachers over so many years. Yet we have no archive (so far as those of us here now, know). We are about to receive a box of records from a key donor who allowed the transformation to Great Kids Farm to happen in 2008 and would like to start by archiving her materials well. From there, we have other directions the full archive project could go and will need both expert guidance for the process and assistance to get it done. But one thing at a time! If you have skills as an archivist or historian, be in touch.

Mission Statement

Friends of Great Kids Farm, Inc. is a nonprofit organization created to support and promote Baltimore City Schools’ Great Kids Farm. The Farm, occupying 33-acres of abundant fields and forest just west of the city, engages students with good food from farm to fork and prepares them to lead sustainability efforts in their communities. We envision a new generation of healthy, creative young people fully aware of their ability to live lightly, profitably and joyfully with one another on this earth.

Description

Great Kids Farm is a 33-acre living, working farm that educates students of all ages about healthy eating, sustainable agriculture and the natural sciences. Great Kids Farm connects young people in Baltimore City Public Schools (City Schools) to the soil, plants, and animals that nourish their bodies and provide their food. Through hands-on experiences, students and teachers use Great Kids Farm to bring classroom lessons to life.

Operated by Baltimore City Public Schools, the 33-acre Catonsville farm is integral to the school system's efforts to improve school food and educate children and families about how nutritious foods form the foundation for healthy people and a sound environment.
