Event Description:
Walnut Creek Wetland Park has a long history with Big Sweeps. There were Big Sweeps being conducted here by Partners for Environmental Justice more than a decade before there was ever even a park! We need volunteers to continue the legacy by helping us to remove trash that is thrown into the wetland, as well as trash that washes into the wetland from Walnut Creek and Little Rock Creeks when they spill their banks during heavy rain events.

Volunteer Duties:
Litter pickup along State, Peterson, Bailey and Garner Roads, within Walnut Creek Wetland Park, and within Little Rock and Walnut Creeks.

Impact:
Over the course of time, over 58 tons of trash have been picked up from this sensitive area.

Work Environment:
This event will take place outside. Refreshments will be available when we are done. Restrooms are available at the center.

Volunteer Requirements:
All volunteers must be 14 years of age or older, unless accompanied by a parent or group leader. All volunteers under 18 years of age must have a volunteer release signed by their parent or guardian. Adult volunteers must also sign a waiver.

Special Instructions:
Volunteers should dress to be outdoors, and possibly get messy, wet or muddy. Some volunteers will be going into the creek with boots. Bring your own boots or borrow a pair of ours. Volunteers should bring a refillable water bottle. Snacks will be available after the cleanup.

Group Registration Information:
Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. A group leader must email mary.owens@raleighnc.gov to register. All groups will be required to provide a list of names and emails for their volunteers.

Per department policy, this volunteer opportunity is not to be used towards court-appointed/ suggested community service hours.
