Ten Thousand Villages Alexandria is looking for dynamic, engaging and action-oriented individuals interested in becoming volunteer Board Members to fill a variety of roles on our Board of Directors.

Ten Thousand Villages is a fair trade non-profit retail store. We operate our Alexandria location using a local Board made up of folks with diverse professional backgrounds and life experiences. Alongside the Store Manager, the Board makes decisions about the store regarding the budget, marketing strategies, and strategic planning and supports the store through outreach efforts, event planning, and volunteering.

We are especially interested (but not limited to) recruiting individuals with skills in the following areas:

  • Accounting and Financial Planning
  • HR and Personnel Management
  • Marketing and Event Planning
  • Outreach and Community Engagement
  • Fundraising
  • Legal

Duties of the board are as follows:

  1. Determines how Ten Thousand Villages Alexandria will carry out its mission through long and short-range planning
  2. Adopts an annual budget and provides fiscal oversight
  3. Recruits, orients, and develops board members
  4. Establishes policies for the effective management of Ten Thousand Villages Alexandria
  5. Hires and evaluates the performance of the Director/Manager
  6. Consults with manager on new ideas and/or strategies to continually growth the organization.

General Responsibilities

  1. A commitment to fair trade and Ten Thousand Village’s contribution to fair trade.
  2. Know Ten Thousand Villages mission, goals, bylaws, policies, programs, services, strengths and needs.
  3. Attend board meetings and appropriate committee meetings
  4. Actively serve on at least one committee and offer to take on special assignments when needed
  5. Review agenda and supporting documents prior to meetings
  6. Participate and help plan special events

Time Commitment

Board terms are for three years and can be renewed for second term of three years.

Board meetings are held once a month for roughly 2 hours. Board meetings are usually the third Thursday of the month starting at 7:30 pm at the King street store location. Board members are expected to attend the majority of board meetings.

Engagement

Board members are also expected to be actively engaged in:

  1. Answering emails and partaking in unscheduled/special board phone calls when needed
  2. Attending in-person and phone meetings regularly
  3. Attending and supporting events through planning, monetary donations, food/drink contributions, and setup of the event
  4. Willing to lead a committee
  5. Willing to help with ad hoc needs related to store operations
  6. Contributing ideas and planning initiatives


Ten Thousand Villages of Alexandria is also interested in individuals who have a high level of investment in the local Alexandria community, who believe in the fair trade mission, and who enjoy engaging with people. Ten Thousand Villages of Alexandria is a fair trade retail store that markets the arts and crafts of people in developing countries who would otherwise be unemployed or underemployed. Our objective is to provide vital, fair income to these artisans. This income empowers them to secure food, education and healthcare for their families, to improve their housing and to contribute to their communities.

  • Must be at least 21
  • -2 hours of board meetings a month, 4-5 hours of business communication (email, phone, etc. ) and business support per month
  • -Looking for someone who lives or works in Alexandria area but are open to anyone in the DMV (or dialing in remotely if outside of the DMV)
