Impact: Young Athletes provides children with activities and games that meet their individual skill and ability levels, while allowing them to play together in a fun and inclusive environment. The program shows that all children should be valued for their talents and abilities. Through Young Athletes, all children, their families and people in the community are welcomed into the world of Special Olympics and can be a part of an inclusive team.

Work Environment: Young Athletes will be held in conjunction with community center's Tot Time program. All activities will be held inside a gym or multi-purpose room. Volunteers will need to be able to move around, use repetitive hand motion; talk and hear; stand; and walk. The volunteer will frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; reach with hands and arms; pull, push; and lift. The volunteer must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. There will be a restroom on site.

Volunteer Requirements: Minimum age to volunteer is 16 or older without a parent; Volunteers age 10 - 15 can register to attend with a parent. All volunteers must sign a volunteer release waiver, or if under 18, have the form signed by a parent or guardian. Volunteers over age of 16 will need to submit to a background screening, as outlined by the Raleigh Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, Specialized Recreation and Inclusion Services program.

Special Instructions: All equipment and curriculum will be supplied and kept onsite at each community center location. Volunteers should plan on wearing comfortable clothes and tennis shoes, that allow for movement, walking and/or running. Volunteers should also plan to bring a refillable water bottle.

Group Registration Information: Registration as a volunteer is first come, first served. A group leader must email mary.owens@raleighnc.gov to register. All groups will be required to provide a list of names and emails for their volunteers.
