Students of Service (SOS)


Nationally recognized for its commitment to empower students to become social entrepreneurs, SOS’ Make It Happen Initiative allows students to design, organize, and carry out a service project of their own creation. SOS gives the students carrying out the initiatives access to some of its resources (volunteers, social media publicity), which helps to better their service projects, as managing these projects can be challenging for students alone.

Under the supervision of the SERVE Manager, the Make It Happen Program Manager acts a mentor/overseer to the students carrying out the service projects, helping the students plan and execute a successful project while also teaching them organizational and leadership skills. The Make it Happen Initiative is designed to advance inclusive entrepreneurship by encouraging youth to create their own social entrepreneurship ventures with the help and guidance of SOS. The ideal candidate will have an entrepreneurial mindset and will require limited supervision and direction, but will adhere to the SOS mission and systems with a team-player mindset.

Responsibilities include:

  • Working in whatever capacity needed to help ensure that Make It Happen projects are successful
  • Help students scope their projects and implement them
  • Utilize project management practices to ensure quality experiences for the students leading MIH projects
  • Create systems and processes to sustain the MIH program, including roll-outs, celebrations, and regular check-ins.
  • Tweak application process
  • Empower the youth to take maximum responsibility for their project and ensure that they understand the scope of what they are doing and who they affect.
  • Encourage a broad variety of projects
  • Prompt the youth/organizer to see the value in their project and implement a post project summary (ex. What they learned while doing the project)
  • Tie-in reflections for the students

Mission Statement

Students of Service (SOS) is dedicated to education through service and travel by providing students with the opportunity to learn abroad in order to better their own communities and serve back home.


SOS is working to strengthen and deepen student’s understanding and knowledge of the world. To do this students ranging from 6th-12th grades, from different walks of life will form a core group. The group will meet with the SOS leader who will guide them through service projects, team-building and leadership exercises, cross-cultural understanding, and conflict resolution skills, and practical training on travel and safety abroad. These experiences tie in with what kids are learning in the classroom. All of this culminates with an educational trip abroad in the summer that inspires students to come home and bring more positive change to our community.
