JOB SUMMARY:
Position is for an instructor to plan and deliver STEM-related curriculum using the RAFT curriculum to 15-20 high school-aged foster youth at Greenhouse Building in Gilroy, CA. Lesson delivery generally occurs in the second half of the day (~3 hours), with the first half of the day allotted to instructor prep and time to engage with the youth during professional development curriculum delivered by PIVOTAL staff.
Instructor should feel passionate about delivering STEM curriculum and have a willingness to become familiar with STEM topics. Instructor will have the opportunity to work with PIVOTAL staff to create a curriculum outline through RAFT. The curriculum is flexible depending on instructor interests and the population being served.
PIVOTAL staff will be present on all Saturdays the cohort is in session to deliver the organization’s professional development curriculum and handle site operations and classroom management.
Program areas of focus are on increasing students’ interest in science, supportive relationships, and self-esteem through project-based learning.
PIVOTAL staff can coach/train instructor in instructing this population of students, and instructor should be aware that working with youth formerly or currently in care is unique.
Students should be able to present 1-2 projects from the curriculum at graduation.
POSITION DETAILS:
Timeline: September 14, 2019 - November 2, 2019
The first day of class is generally for program overview (with a light lesson prepared) and the last day of class is graduation, leaving 7 full days of classroom instruction and curriculum delivery.
Commitment: 8 consecutive Saturdays from 9:30am-4pm
Location: Greenhouse Building, 7500 Monterey Rd, Gilroy, CA 95020
Duties and Responsibilities (Including):
- Lead group activities
- Take daily attendance
- Manage supplies
- Supervise field trips
- Coordinate client-student interactions
- Troubleshoot Weebly sites
- Communicate with SVCF and HTH staff
- Support graduation planning
- Assess students
- Participate in program evaluations
