Bit by Bit is made possible by volunteers who generously donate their time to the program; they are the lifeblood of the equine therapeutic program. There are many ways in which a person can assist the program through volunteering - prior experience with horses is not necessary. The minimum age for a volunteer is 16 years old. We always have a spot for you! Email bitbybitok@gmail.com for a volunteer application! Here is a video showing you a little bit of Bit by Bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6CNY4lWHQ1k.

Different Types of Volunteer Opportunities:

  • Side-walking
  • Horse Leading
  • Barn Chores

Volunteer Requirements: Bit by Bit requires our volunteers to be a minimum age
of sixteen (16) years old to work with the horses and riders. Volunteers working in the
riding sessions must be able to walk a minimum of forty-five (45) minutes and jog for
brief intervals. It is not necessary to have previous experience with horses or individuals
with special needs.

Time Commitment: The BBB program accepts and is grateful for any and all the
time that the volunteers are able to commit to the program. However, to provide
continuity for the participants, volunteers assisting directly with classes (side-walkers,
horse leaders) are asked to commit to an entire semester of lessons. Also, whenever
possible, it is beneficial to work with the same individual rider and helps build a
relationship between the volunteer and rider, which is more effective and allows the rider
to progress more rapidly. When signing up to be a side-walker or a horse leader, you are
expected to attend every class for that semester that you can!

Mission Statement

Bit By Bit provides a safe, regularly scheduled equine experience for individuals with special needs. We use equestrian activities to engage the bodies, minds, and spirits of people facing challenges in their lives. Certified professional instructors, trained volunteers, and skilled horses work with students to achieve individual goals. Together, we make strides for those with special needs!

Description

Since opening in 1997, Bit by Bit has been and continues to be Northeast Oklahoma's premier therapeutic riding program. Founded by Linda Barron and originally located in Claremore, Bit by Bit began as a way to make a difference in the lives of individuals with special needs through equine therapy. Over the years, the program has relocated to Oologah and expanded to serve over 70 students, offering therapeutic riding lessons to children and adults living with a variety of special needs. One thing hasn't changed: the commitment to making a difference in riders' lives. This is possible thanks to over 150 volunteers, nearly 20 horses, and generous support from donors.

The benefits of therapeutic horseback riding are many and varied. Because the horse gently and rhythmically moves the rider's body in a manner similar to a human gait, riders with physical disabilities often show improvement in flexibility, balance, and muscle strength. For individuals with mental or emotional disabilities, the unique relationship formed with the horse can lead to increase confidence, patience, and self-esteem. Educational goals like letter and color recognition can be incorporated into riding activities. Lessons also provide a positive social experience for students as they interact with volunteers, staff members, other riders, and horses. Research shows that individuals of all ages who participate in equine-assisted activities and therapies can experience physical and emotional rewards.
