About NYLAG
Founded in 1990, the New York Legal Assistance Group provides free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. The organization serves immigrants, seniors, the homebound, families facing foreclosure, renters facing eviction, low-income consumers, those in need of government assistance, children in need of special education, domestic violence victims, persons with disabilities, patients with chronic illness or disease, low-wage workers, low-income members of the LGBTQ community, Holocaust survivors, and others in need. IPU NYCitizenship Volunteer Opportunity
NYLAG’s Immigrant Protection Unit (IPU) is seeking volunteers to specifically assist with NYCitizenship, a partnership between NYLAG and the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Through NYCitizenship, NYLAG attorneys provide citizenship legal services to low-income disabled and elderly lawful permanent residents of New York referred to NYLAG by NY Human Resources Administration.
Volunteers will be based in NYLAG’s main office in Lower Manhattan, and will work to assist project attorney and paralegal/accredited representative in working on the cases. Volunteers will have the opportunity to work directly with the attorney and paralegal assisting with application processing, including but not limited to contacting clients, assisting in obtaining clients’ documents, assisting in obtaining clients USCIS and criminal records, assisting with checking USCIS and clients’ mail, preparing and organizing case files, preparing some simple forms. Training will be provided as necessary. This is an excellent opportunity for those seeking experience in an office environment, have an interested in legal services, and enjoy working with a diverse population!
Responsibilities
- Assist with preparing immigration applications;
- Assist with checking, organizing and filing USCIS mail;
- Making follow up calls as instructed by the attorney or paralegal;
- Assisting in obtaining clients’ records;
- Assisting in creating case files;
- Assisting in closing completed cases;
- Assist attorney with administrative tasks related to application process, as necessary
Qualifications
- College or Law School student
- Bilingual capability in Spanish is strongly preferred
- Commitment of 1-2 days per week, 10-15 hours for 3 months or longer
- Interest in public interest law
- Positive attitude and self-motivated
- Professional demeanor and punctuality
