PURPOSE:
Provide exemplary customer service to museum patrons and offer additional support to front-line staff. Volunteers in this role are a friendly face of DHS; welcoming and assisting visitors with general questions about the Society, Midtown and the immediate Detroit area and provide news about museum activities and upcoming events.
This is a great volunteer opportunity for personable individuals with a track record of having great customer service skills and a willingness to bridge the information gap between the museum and its visitors.
DUTIES:
- Engage visitors by creating a welcoming environment;
- Answer visitor inquiries and provide information about the Society, the cultural district in Midtown and surrounding Detroit areas;
- Provide directional assistance within our galleries;
- Promote DHS memberships and offer details on benefits of membership;
- Conduct research for visitors by utilizing museum website resources i.e. Encyclopedia of Detroit;
- Survey guests on a variety of subjects when requested;
- Advertise museum projects, programs and events by distributing promo and marketing materials.
SUGGESTED SCHEDULING:
We ask that candidates are willing to commit to at least 6 months of volunteer service to the Society and have the ability to volunteer at minimum two 3-hour shifts weekly. Volunteers will have the choice between daily shifts: (AM) 10am-1pm or (PM) 1-4pm. Volunteers will be required to arrive 30 minutes prior to shift start.
There will be a one month trial period for this volunteer position. DHS will coordinate with each volunteer to assign duties that are a best fit for our needs and each individual interest level.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
- Maintain working knowledge of ongoing Society-related programs and events;
- Possess excellent interpersonal, communication and organization skills;
- The ability to communicate respectfully with persons of diverse cultures and backgrounds;
- Ability to respond to patron inquiries in a timely fashion;
- Ability to represent the Society in a friendly, courteous and professional manner;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with Society staff, venue coordinators and the general public;
- Maintain the ability to work individually and as part a team environment.
- Ability to follow instructions creatively and with a moment’s notice;
- Ability and willingness to collaborate with staff from several departments.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Volunteers should expect a moderate to high noise level, varying on peak tour hours and museum events. All work will be performed onsite in an open environment.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Position will fluctuate between sitting and standing for up to 3 hours at a time.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions required of this volunteer role.
TRAINING & SUPPORT:
Volunteers will receive on-the-job training of Society culture and day-to-day front-line operations. Volunteers in this role will be required to attend all mandatory trainings and workshops in the timeframe permitted.
