Ascot Hills Park serves a special and distinct community need in the northeast region of the City of Los Angeles. With 120 acres of open space and located in one of the region’s most park-poor neighborhoods, Ascot Hills has the potential to serve as a place of refuge from the noise, congestion, and hurried pace of city life. Ascot Hills Park has two fundamental roles: to provide a place for nature education, appreciation, and habitat restoration and to operate as a center for community activities and recreational uses that are compatible with the natural resource values of the park.

Volunteer Roles and Responsibilities: Tasks of volunteers mostly include landscape maintenance and planting. In addition, volunteers may help in nursery management, GIS (Geographical Informational Systems): hydrology, energy, plant biology and native/drought tolerant plants, and community outreach.

Requirements: Young Adult training (16-24), any age volunteers can request opportunities. Field sites may include hills and steep slopes. Use of tools will require safety personal protective equipment (ppe). * Any volunteer under the age of 18 will need to bring and have signed by a parent/guardian a Volunteer Agreement & Release for Minors. The form will be emailed and must be presented on volunteer day.

"The main invasive weed is Castor Bean. There are many small seedling plants that have sprouted where the ground was recently disturbed by grading. We aim to get these plants before they grow to mature size and produce seed. We do start early in the morning to be able to finish before the peak heat of mid day."

Mission Statement

We are a community-based, non-profit organization that helps heal environmental injustice through urban forestry, nature-based design-build, habitat restoration, and workforce development. We work in underinvested communities in Los Angeles County - particularly in Northeast, East and South Los Angeles - to build climate resiliency through stewardship, planting, design, and community engagement.

Description

NET is recognized throughout the state of California for its creation of innovative, low impact native plant based sustainable designs, and for forging strategic partnerships with urban communities. Founded in 1989 and incorporated in 1991, NET has planted over 100,000 trees, designed and built almost 50 parks and projects (half of them along the LA River), and trained and employed hundreds of frontline environmental workers from the communities we serve, and created natural green schoolyards for over 20 school communities.
