One hour a week can make a difference in the literacy of a child.

Do you enjoy working with children? Would you like to help boost the reading and learning skills of local students? If so, you may want to become a Sight Word Buster! The Sight Word Busters program is made up of volunteers who spend, on average, one hour per week working with students in local primary classrooms.

Our program volunteers work directly with students one-on-one at their reading level to help them learn letter names, sounds, and high frequency sight words and reinforce other reading skills being taught in the classroom.

Due to the spread of COVID 19 and subsequent school closures, students have missed a significant amount of classroom time over the last two years. Under normal circumstances, this additional practice in learning high frequency words helps students in primary grades become strong readers. It is even more important now to help overcome learning loss due to the pandemic.

Volunteers need no prior knowledge or training. The Sight Word Busters program provides volunteer training and support. Some remote volunteer opportunities may be available.

If you would like more information about this important work, please visit us at https://www.sightwordbusters.org/getting-started-volunteer. If you want to make a difference in the life of a child, this is the opportunity for you!

Mission Statement

The mission of Sight Word Busters is to ensure primary students master high-frequency words (sight words) using well-trained community volunteers working one-on-one with students in their own classrooms, employing consistent practices, self-paced goals, and positive reinforcement.

Description

Founded in 2011, Sight Word Busters is a grass roots, volunteer-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that supports TK (Transitional Kindergarten) through Second grade students in schools throughout Placer County and beyond. Students love working with our trained volunteers. Volunteers love watching students make progress in reading. Teachers appreciate daily sight word reinforcement for their students without having to prepare activities for the volunteers.
Linda LoBue, founder and coordinator of the Sight Word Buster volunteer program, has worked in education for 35 years as a teacher, principal, and reading specialist. Her many years of experience have taught her the importance of children developing strong literacy skills before they enter third grade. Children who attain literacy prior to this defining period are significantly more likely to succeed academically and in their long-term pursuits. This is the mission that Linda has brought to Placer County.
Sight Word Busters has officially received the highest level of recognition from GuideStar.
