In Passaic County, nearly half of the children in foster care identify as Hispanic. And yet, fewer than 9 percent of the volunteer advocates who serve them are bilingual in English and Spanish. Children who are involved in the child welfare system desperately need Spanish-speaking advocates to speak up for their needs and represent their best interests.

Court Appointed Special Advocate volunteers, or CASAs, look out for the best interests of children in Passaic County who have been abused or neglected, or are otherwise involved in the child welfare system. CASAs advocate for the child's needs and gather information from the family, caretakers, teachers, doctors, and caseworkers in order to make informed recommendations to the family court about the child’s future. Often, CASAs are the only consistent person in the child's life while they are involved in the child welfare system.

No specific background, training, or education is required; all training and resources are provided. Make a difference in a child's life without being their foster parent and by dedicating only 10 hours per month.
Being a CASA will change a child's life -- and yours.

About CASA of Passaic and Union Counties

Location:

415 Hamburg Turnpike, Suite D2, Wayne, NJ 07470, US

Mission Statement

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Passaic and Union Counties is an independent, non-profit organization that champions the best interests of children involved in the child welfare system. CASA volunteers serve as a child's advocate in court and are committed to ensuring that needed services and assistance are made available to children in need.

Description

Every year more than half a million abused and neglected children are in need of safe, permanent, nurturing homes.

That's where CASA steps in. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) was created in 1977 to make sure the abuse and neglect these children originally suffered at home doesn't continue as abuse and neglect at the hands of the system. As trained advocates, CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to be a voice for these children in court. The result is that a child has an individual advocate to speak for them in court.

It is the CASA vision to provide a volunteer for each and every abused and neglected child who needs one.
