Jewish Family Service of San Diego

Jewish Family Service of San Diego is a client-centered, impact-driven organization working to build a stronger, more resilient community. We believe our volunteers are the backbone of our Agency. We strive to ensure that each volunteer is treated with dignity and respect. Our goal is your success. Be our partner in Moving Forward Together.

The Balboa Avenue Older Adult Center (BAOAC) offers a safe haven for older adults with Dementia or Alzheimer’s. An average of 30 adults per day take part in daily activities. Activities include daily exercises, lectures, games, cultural programs and live entertainment. Meals are available on a sliding donation scale and no one is refused a meal if they cannot pay.

Goal of Position:

The goal is to make members at the BAOAC feel welcomed and comforted when they arrive by greeting them warmly. Volunteers ensure a friendly, kind and engaging atmosphere for the older adults. They also participate in activities like BINGO, singing, and dancing. We hope for volunteer lives to be enriched through this experience by interacting with older adults and learning their stories.

*Please note that as a volunteer you are welcome to order lunch from our JFS Loonin Kitchen, which is $7 a day. You can order your lunch from the BAOAC Program Coordinator the day before. If you would like to bring your own lunch, please keep in mind that this is a Kosher center. So, we will ask that you take your lunch break outside or within the office. We need 5 volunteers to help us paint and beautify one of the walls of our food pantry on a Sunday. We will provide the paint and supplies, the project should take about 3 hours at most. We can provide our own team leader as well :)
