For 43 years the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater has been sharing Spanish dance with the City of Chicago and beyond. In residence at Northeastern Illinois University, the company strives to preserve, promote, and present the Flamenco, folkloric, classical, and contemporary dance and music traditions of Spain.

Founded in 1975 by Dame Libby Komaiko ,and incorporated in 1976, the organization is now under the dynamic leadership of Irma Suarez Ruiz, artistic director and Jorge Pérez, executive director. The company is comprised of 40 dancers, singers, and musicians representing a mosaic of cultures from around the world. The organization is praised by educators, arts professionals, business and government leaders, as well as arts and cultural media for its artistic excellence, cultural integrity, and of course, its commitment to arts and higher education opportunities for all.

The Executive Board seeks curious and generous individuals who appreciate and value the performing arts, want to make a difference, be an active member of their community, and be recognized for their efforts. The ideal board member will be passionate about the arts in Chicago and play a major role in supporting, expanding, and advocating for the Ensemble Español and its efforts.

Desired Skills and Experience: Passion for the arts, fundraising, event planning, strategic thinker, corporate contacts, team player, goal oriented, problem solver, positive attitude, and creative.

Role & Responsibilities:

  • 2 year term
  • Serve on a committee
  • Monthly meetings at Northeastern Illinois University (10 total)
  • Participate in fundraising efforts
  • $1,100 annual tax-deductible membership dues
  • Attend events and performances as possible

Description

The Ensemble Espanol Center for Spanish Dance and Music is chartered to share the rich traditions of the dance, music, literature, and culture of Spain in the classical, folkloric and Flamenco styles, with all communities, and to be a center which encourages new artistic creativity within the framework of the Ibero-Hispanic (Spain) experience. Through performance, training and educational programming the Ensemble promotes this cultural pluralism as a living source of pride at the city, state, national, and international levels.
