Position Overview & Impact:
The Sutro Library has the largest genealogy collection West of Salt Lake City and yet this remains a mystery to most Californians. Use of social media can help us tell a compelling story and share our genealogical resources digitally.
Responsibilities:
Research potential social media posts that relate to local and family history
Identify items/images suitable for social media posting
Ask questions when in doubt.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge of genealogy and family history
Detail oriented
Ability to follow instructions
Ability to work independently
Effective communication skills both written and verbal
Familiarity with the MS Office Suite and presentation/projection tools and social media platforms
Ability to move fully-laden book carts and carry up to 50 pounds
***Allergy alert! Volunteers with sensitivity to dust should avoid this position
Desired Qualifications:
Interest in social media, photography.
Experience working with their hands
Training provided:
Successful applicants will be trained in basic aspects of care and handling of archival materials. This includes how to safely handle materials when photographing them. Time will be spent explaining how to use the CSL catalog and other library bibliographic tools.
All tools necessary to perform the work will be provided to the Volunteer. Tools will remain the property of the Sutro Library.

Description
The 160-year old California State Library serves the people of California in several ways: It is the central reference and research library for state government and the Legislature. It provides non-partisan research to the Legislature and the Governor. It collects, preserves, generates and disseminates information ranging from California's priceless historical items to today's online texts. It advises, consults with, and provides technical assistance to California's public libraries, and it directs state and federal funds to support local public libraries and statewide library programs, and services. It houses the Braille and Talking Book Library which loans braille, cassette and talking books, magazines and playback equipment to northern Californians unable to read conventional print.
