Position Overview

The Sutro Library holdings remain a mystery to most Californians. The Sutro Library is working on a new initiative to create and publish finding aids online. Without this basic research tool, Californians can neither discover nor use our rich genealogical sources. We need a motivated volunteer who will create a digital listing of the Genealogy Collection’s phone fiche holdings, which is currently only accessible on-site at the Sutro Library.

Responsibilities:

Create an inventory Handle items with care and consideration.

Ask questions when in doubt.

Minimum Qualifications:

Detail oriented

Ability to follow instructions

Ability to work independently

Effective communication skills both written and verbal

Familiarity with the MS Office Suite and presentation/projection tools

Adheres to a schedule and is dependable

Desired Qualifications:

Interest in history, public history, research

Experience working with library sources and archival materials

Awareness of archival finding aids

Training provided:

Successful applicants will be trained in basic aspects of care and handling of materials and how to use the library’s bibliographic tools.

All tools necessary to perform the work will be provided. Tools will remain the property of the Sutro Library.

It collects, preserves, generates and disseminates information ranging from California's priceless historical items to today's online texts. It advises, consults with, and provides technical assistance to California's public libraries, and it directs state and federal funds to support local public libraries and statewide library programs, and services. It houses the Braille and Talking Book Library which loans braille, cassette and talking books, magazines and playback equipment to northern Californians unable to read conventional print.
