Bridgeway’s Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Program provides women and children with safe housing at two confidential locations in Saint Charles and Lincoln County. Our domestic violence shelter’s residential services are typically four-six week programs with the primary goal being to obtain safe and stable housing and becoming self-sufficient. Our programs provide additional services to both residential and outreach clients.

The Life Skills Group/Workshop Facilitator and Support Volunteer will provide clients in the shelter with opportunities to learn valuable life skills. The goal is to provide the necessary tools for survivors to become self-sufficient and provide fun and educational activities for adults and children The role will depend upon the Volunteers interest, skills, and experience to determine the group/workshop topics and role of facilitator or support volunteer.

Independent Life Skills groups can be held on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. Life Skills Workshops usually consist of a predetermined curriculum, including the number of sessions and length of the workshop. Volunteers have the freedom to choose group/workshop topics; however, are encouraged to participate in group facilitation or support, whether they have a topic in mind or not. Our staff will assist volunteers in finding a group topic that fits best with each volunteer.

Topics for groups/workshops include, but are not limited to: Mindfulness/Meditation, Self-Care, Budgeting, Resume Building, Interviewing Skills, Goal Setting, Communication Skills, Computer Skills, College Applications/Financial Aid, Time Management, Decision Making Skills, Vision Boards, Meal Planning, Fitness, Mental Health, Habit Formation, etc.

Additional tasks required for this volunteer position may include, but are not limited to:
1. Assist in the research and development of materials necessary to supplement the curriculum.
2. Tutor and mentor clients when necessary.
3. Enhance current group curriculum to include new various topics based on volunteer skills.
4. Develop and provide materials for the chosen group topic or workshop.

  • Orientation or Training
  • There is no time commitment required for group facilitation; however, a commitment of at least two activities per month is preferred. Scheduled times vary for this volunteer position and may include daytime, evening, and weekend hours as needed.
  • Orientation and direct services training. Volunteers will work independently and with staff members to complete assigned tasks. Volunteers are required to attend quarterly meetings of volunteer staff.
