Join us for a community event to give away school supplies and backpacks! Our goal is to give away 500 backpacks. DHS is teaming up with a host of Newport News departments, school and community agencies, churches, sororities and others for this event. Resource providers and community organizations are invited to attend as vendors. Food and entertainment will be provided, including music, activities, and more!
Lunch is provided for volunteers!
How You Can Help:
- Volunteer - 15-25 volunteers to assist at the event with set-up, clean-up, registration, and running activity stations for children, face painting, giving out books, food service station, and other helping as needed during the event.
- Photographers - Take photos at the event. No professional experience necessary!
- Donate Items - We are also seeking donations of school supplies, back packs, craft supplies for the activity stations, refreshments for the event and door prizes for families and children.

Description
Volunteer Services Program - The goal of the Volunteer Services Program is to expand the services and capabilities of the Department of Social Services by utilizing the skills and efforts of volunteers to provide direct services, administrative services, and clerical services.
The Department relies on volunteers to:
- Enrich and extend the routine services being offered
- Supplement the work of the staff
- Perform a direct service to our clients
- Serve as a liaison between the community and the Department
- Afford the citizens of Newport News the opportunity to affect the environment in which they live
