ORGANIZATION: Boy Scouts of America

Purpose: The Board of Directors provides governance to the organization, represents it to the community, and accepts the ultimate legal and fiduciary authority for it.

Mission: To be the premier youth development program in our communities by engaging young people to improve the world by inspiring leadership, character, and purpose.

About Us: The Boy Scouts of America, Laurel Highlands Council, serves nearly 17,000 youth members and 5,000 volunteer adult leaders throughout its multi-state footprint in Western Pennsylvania, Western Maryland, and parts of West Virginia, making it one of the largest councils in the Boy Scouts of America.

Responsibilities of Individual Leadership Board members:

  1. Support the council through a personal financial contribution at the leadership level and through active participation in fundraising programs. Enroll as a Friend of Scouting.
  2. Promote Scouting and the council whenever and wherever possible. Through vocation and vocational activity, be on the lookout for potential leadership board members.
  3. Participate in the work of the council by being an active participant on your selected committee.
  4. Regularly attends board meetings and important related meetings.
  5. Speak freely and participate actively in helping to formulate council plans, procedures, and policies and sharing with the board of directors.
  6. Provides organizational leadership and advice.
  7. Assists in developing a long-range strategic plan and monitors progress toward implementation.
  8. Fulfill the registration requirements, which include Youth Protection Training.

The Leadership Board is made up of community and business leaders and is approved by the council nominating committee annually. This group of volunteers is selected for their skills, knowledge and leadership.

Members of the Leadership Board must serve actively on a committee. These committees are responsible for driving the success of the council. The list of the committees is by separate attachment.
