This is a great opportunity for a volunteer to teach a group of beginner older adults piano/ keyboard class.

This commitment will take place once a week for three months. The shift would take place at senior center in Henderson once a week, either Mondays at 12:30pm or Thursdays at 9 am. Volunteers choice.

There are many benefits to learning music in the third and fourth age. Evidence suggests that after months of music lessons, there were more robust gains in memory, verbal fluency, the speed at which information is processed, planning ability, and other cognitive functions, compared with those who had not received lessons. While music has proven to be beneficial for this age group, there seems to be a severe lack of support. Despite the proven benefits to this age group, these programs are historically targeted to children and young adults, and the lack of access to learn and create music in the third age is often associated with ageism.

Age On seeks to offer free music classes to older Nevadans to help improve their well being.

Mission Statement

END AGEISM, UNIFY VOICES, DISRUPT THE NORM, THINK LOCAL Age-Friendly Network Nevada began in January of 2017, after acknowledging a need for an organization to facilitate a network aimed at providing a voice for older adults; that focuses on combating ageism, social and economic insecurities and also helps develop and support organizations promoting an age friendly city. AFNN is committed to local collaboration and thinks local first.

Description

AFNN was founded after recognizing a need that wasn’t being addressed in Southern Nevada. The founder often heard many older adults say "I just want to be heard" whether through disjointed health care, in addressing their needs, and many issues affecting their lives. It became too apparent, that many of these struggles were a product of ageism. Consequently, older adults are facing economic and social issues leaving a lack of connectivity, accessibility, unification, loneliness food and work insecurities, trumped by attitudes that their voice and opinions did not matter.
