Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: The Salvation Army - San Francisco, CA

Food Pantry Volunteer

In the COVID-19 crisis, The Salvation Army is continuing to provide (and even increase) the essential services we provide to ensure people have their basic needs such as distributing food, providing or assisting to find shelter, homeless services and shelter, rehabilitation services, etc. We are to continue these activities, being careful to take personal protection precautions for ourselves, our staff and volunteers.

Our food pantry in the South of Market urgently needs volunteers to help serve around 200 households every Friday morning, largely from the low-income elderly community.

Volunteers will assist with unloading and sorting food donations, setting up the pick-up area and pre-packaging food bags. Volunteers may also be asked to assist with check-in, managing lines and ensuring social distancing is being observed by clients. Proper social distancing and hygiene measures will be in place and volunteers and clients are expected to comply.

Time frame: Every Friday - 6:45am-9:30am.
Volunteers required: 6 volunteers each week.
Requirements: Must be able to stand, walk, lift medium-heavy weights and be physically well with no underlying health issues. Cantonese/Mandarin language skills VERY helpful.

The Food Pantry takes place in the parking lot entrance of our South of Market Corps Commuity Center - access from Clara Street (4th & Clara).

To register for this activity, volunteers will need to complete on-line registration through The Salvation Army's volunteer website to attend to required volunteer waivers. See link

Description

The Salvation Army was established in London in 1865, and since 1883 has been serving the San Francisco Bay Area, offering practical support, spiritual comfort and a critical safety net to people in need. The safety net is funded in part by donations from the Red Kettle Campaign which started in San Francisco in 1891. Nearly 600,000 San Franciscans receive assistance from the Army annually through a range of social services; clothing and shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, opportunities for underprivileged children, alcohol rehabilitation, transitional housing, nutritional and housing support for seniors and relief for disaster survivors. For every dollar donated to The Salvation Army, 82 cents is used to support those services in the 16 facilities throughout San Francisco and South San Francisco communities.
