Kids Construction Event Volunteer Help Needed!

Hi there! The American Cancer Society is hosting a children's construction event and we need your help! There will be a ton of moving parts (quite literally) and we need all hands on deck for this event's success! Kids will come out and spend the day operating equipment and playing in the dirt. This is a great way to get service hours or just spend the day having fun!

When: Sunday, September 15th from 11- 4 PM
Who: The American Cancer Society, The Construction Industry, and YOU!
What: The Big Dig: Construction for a Cure

We'd love to have people there for at least two hour shifts.

These are the following roles:
Set-Up (10 needed):

  • Capable of setting up tables and chairs, putting up banners, putting out table cloths, organizing swag station, making sure equipment operators have everything they need, and decorating. Set-Up would begin at 8:30 AM.
Clean-Up (10 needed):

  • Volunteers needed to help pick up trash post-event. Please help us collapse table and chairs, and pack everything up in a timely manner! Clean up would begin at 3:45 PM.
Registration Attendant (3-4 Needed)
  • Capable of counting back and accepting cash for event. Capable of explaining basic scope of event and directing children to collect swag from the swag station. Maintains and handles basic event and monetary questions about the event. Ensures the highest level of customer service and welcomes all guest to the event. Must complete a background check prior to the event. Volunteers needed between 10:30 am - 4 pm.
Activities Attendant (10 Needed)
  • Description: Preside over games, check in guests to participate, and set up equipment areas. An ability to excite and support a small crowd of children, while watching lines. Must complete a background check prior to event. Volunteers needed between 10:30 am - 4 pm.
Assembly Line (10 Needed)
  • Responsible for creating and maintaining a line for access to construction equipment. Responsible for keeping children away from moving equipment and assisting with the interaction of the equipment during the event. Only one child can sit/interact with moving equipment at a time. Must complete background check prior to event. Volunteers needed between 10:30 am - 4 pm.

Equipment Operator (10+ Needed)
  • Responsible for maintaining and operating equipment during event. Must be union certified and show proof of certification prior to the event. Must be screened for a background check prior to event date. Volunteers needed between 10:30 am - 4 pm.
First Aid + Sunscreen Station Volunteer (2-4 Needed)
  • Must have first aid certification and be capable of performing basic first aid. Also responsible for recommending sunscreen use and educational initiatives around ACS sunscreen recommendations. Must complete a background check prior to the event and proof of current or prior CPR/First Aid Certification (no more than 10 years old). Volunteers needed between 10:30 am - 4 pm.
Parking Attendant (6 Needed)
  • Responsible for directing all incoming traffic to designated parking areas. Must be knowledge about designated handicap parking. Required to remain in the parking lot for the duration of the event. Required to direct participants to check-in and registration tent. Must complete a background check prior to the event. Volunteers needed between 10:30 am - 4 pm.

  • We are asking volunteers to stay at least 2 hours, if not the entire 5 hours! Help is needed anywhere. We appreciate it!
