Make A Difference!

The Companion/Vigil Volunteer provides support and visits to our hospice patients which offers a respite to the family. Our volunteers provide emotional support to the patient and his/her family by comforting, supporting, providing information and guidance. The Volunteer's role is a calming, peaceful presence for the patient and family. They provide the support and physical presence that patients and families need. The vigil process may include any or all of the following:

  • being a calm presence
  • sitting with the patient and family
  • sitting at the bedside
  • being open to conversation, listening and allowing the person to share his/her thoughts and feelings, shared silence
  • reading inspirational texts or scripture per the patient's and/or family's request, requested rituals, providing inspirational music, lighting candles

Volunteers maintain a sacred relationship with our patients and families in order to offer a listening ear and provide extra emotional support.

Mission Statement

Northeast Ohio Hospice promotes the hospice concept of caring and encourages and aids in the development of quality hospice programs for terminally ill patients and their families. We educate the public about hospice care and respond to the needs of the local community with hospice services that are consistent with the medical-moral teachings of the Roman Catholic Church. In fulfilling our mission we commit ourselves to these focuses: •Enhance quality of life when quantity is limited •Provide comfort when cure is no longer possible •Palliative and curative care •Recognizes dying as normal •Acknowledges grief as a normal response to loss •Emphasizes pain and symptom control •Family is the unit of care •Aware that "family" is often non-traditional •Nursing facility staff •Friends or partners

As an expert in aging services, Eliza Jennings is committed to offering the same compassionate support to individuals and their families who are seeking day-to-day care and services as they age, as well as those facing advanced illness and end-of-life care decisions. Comfort & Care hospice services are geared to providing choices that sustain dignity and autonomy, and enhance comfort and quality of life during this difficult time.

Comfort & Care team members are experienced in geriatric care and specialize in the provision of pain and symptom management, patient and family education, and spiritual and bereavement counseling. With this level of support, patients are empowered to make meaningful decisions about their care and the legacy they will leave to their loved ones.

Comfort & Care at Eliza Jennings is a member of Northeast Ohio Hospice. Eliza Jennings is pleased to join with Northeast Ohio Hospice to offer choices for end-of-life care as part of our commitment to provide the full spectrum of aging services. Northeast Ohio Hospice was accredited in July 2016 by the Accreditation Commission for HealthCare (ACHC) and has achieved Deemed status, having met or exceeded all Medicare and Medicaid certification standards.
