What is a Big Sister? Big Sisters help change the trajectory of an at-risk girl’s life. They serve as a consistent figure in their lives for a 1-year commitment. No experience is necessary! With just two outings a month, you can make a difference in the life a girl in need in San Diego.

Big Sisters are women 21 years of age or older. They must have a car, insurance, good driving record, undergo a criminal background check and commit a minimum of two outings per month for a minimum one-year commitment.

What do Big Sisters do? They spend quality time with their Little Sisters doing activities that they already enjoy. Hiking, baking, exploring, watching movies, reading and much much more. The possibilities are endless!

We currently have Little Sisters waiting for a match in the following areas: Oceanside, Escondido, Carmel Valley, Mira Mesa, Kearny Mesa, Normal Heights, Logan Heights, Bonita, Chula Vista, El Cajon, Lemon Grove, Spring Valley, and Lakeside. Ideally we match you with a Little Sister that lives no more than 20 minutes away from you.

How do I get started? Please visit www.girlsrisingsd.org/bigsisters and watch our orientation videos.

About Girls Rising San Diego

PO Box 161218, San Diego, CA 92176, US

Mission Statement

"To empower underserved girls to recognize their value and pursue higher goals through a community of women mentors."

The mission of Girls Rising is to empower underserved girls to recognize their value and pursue higher goals through a community of women mentors. Our vision is a world where all girls know their value, have the skills to impact their own future, and have support available to reach their goals.

Our Big Sisters commit to spending time with their Little Sisters two to four times per month for a minimum of one year. We train our mentors to assist the Little Sisters with goal-setting, increasing self-esteem, and graduating each grade on time.

Through our program, the Little Sisters also gain a larger support network of women and girls. We host six to eight events each year for our matches, focused on exposure to new experiences, education, and building self-esteem and life skills.
