ORGANIZATION: Food for Others

  • A group opportunity. Invite your friends.

Every year, 100 billion pounds of food are thrown away in the United States. At the same time, 49 million Americans go hungry. Food for Others is working to change both of these statistics. We are looking for gleaning volunteers to help recover excess produce from Hollin Farms, so that we may distribute it to those in need.

If you are interested in spending the day picking fruits and veggies in one of Virginia’s most beautiful farms and orchards, this is the volunteer opportunity for you!

Gleaning volunteers will provide their own transportation to and from the farm. Once on the farm, they will spend ~3 hours picking excess crops that this partner farm has so generously allowed us to harvest.

All volunteers must sign up by the Wednesday before the trip to be notified with trip details.

About Food for Others

Location:

2938 Prosperity Avenue, Fairfax, VA 22031, US

Mission Statement

Our mission is to distribute food to our neighbors in need by mobilizing our giving community and volunteers.

Description

In our nation’s capital area, the high cost of living forces many families who are struggling to make ends meet to choose between spending money for food, or on other basic needs such as housing and healthcare. Since 1995, Food for Others has been helping many of these families.

Food for Others is an important part of Northern Virginia’s safety net for those needing food when an emergency strikes and for the growing number of working poor who need to supplement their inadequate food supplies.

Food for Others obtains much of its food through food rescue operations and food drives. Staff and volunteers pick up good food that would have been discarded by local grocery stores and other retail food establishments. The food is brought to the warehouse for temporary storage, including refrigeration as appropriate. Food drives provide the majority of our non-perishable food.

Local merchants, the USDA, food drives, and crop harvests provide the food; volunteers and staff provide the hands; and charitable contributions and fundraising events provide the funds.
