ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Irish International Immigrant Center, located in downtown Boston, Massachusetts, is seeking an intern to provide administrative support to IIIC’s Immigration Legal Services Department. This position offers a wonderful opportunity for someone interested in immigration or social justice to become part of a team of people dedicated to helping newcomers to this country. This is a chance to make a difference in the lives of immigrants and to gain an appreciation for diverse cultures while being part of an organization strongly rooted in its Irish culture.

This is an unpaid internship, but we are happy to assist in any requirements that would qualify an eligible intern for course credit.

TIME COMMITMENT

  • Flexible, but preference given to those able to commit to 20+ hours a week (negotiable)

DATES

  • Fall Term: Sept - December 2019

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide administrative support for the Immigration Legal Services department, including data entry and reporting; closing cases and contacting clients
  • Assist attorney in filling out immigration forms for clients
  • Provide administrative support during walk-in immigration clinics
  • Translate during client appointments
  • Perform other tasks as required by supervisor
  • Participate in departmental and agency wide meetings: trainings, events, etc.
  • Support the IIIC mission

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A commitment to the overall mission and values of IIIC
  • An interest in immigration law desired but not required
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Articulate, and clear communicator
  • Highly motivated, an ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Competent in using Microsoft Word , Excel and databases (Salesforce experience a big plus)
  • Good interpersonal skills - friendly, helpful, and "can do" attitude
  • Ability to handle confidential information with the highest level of discretion
  • Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole or French language skills a plus

The Rian Immigrant Center works independently, and in partnership with other organizations to maximize our services for our clients, advocate for the rights of immigrants and change legislation (Comprehensive Immigration Reform) to enable immigrants to become permanent residents and US citizens. We run a number of cross-community, cross-border programs through our partners in Northern Ireland for young unemployed adults.
