Chicago HOPES for Kids provides shelter-based academic support for children in Chicago's homeless and domestic violence shelters. We run after school programming for both Kindergarten - 5th-grade students 2 hours a day Monday - Thursday, and a Middle School program for 6th-8th graders two hours a day two days a week. Both programs are volunteer-based and consist of three major components; homework help, individual reading support, and enrichment activities. Every volunteer works one-on-one or in a small group with children, allowing for a focus not just on individual academic needs but also Social Emotional Learning skills. Our Fall Program begins in October and runs through mid-December; the winter/spring program begins in February and runs through mid-May; the summer program begins late June and runs through the first week of August.

All programs are coordinated out of our central office housed in the Chicago Literacy Alliance’s Literacenter, and at each shelter, a part-time staff member manages the program and works with volunteers to help them provide quality academic support to the children. Chicago HOPES after-school programs are held at 10 shelter sites throughout Chicago.

The Family Support Coordinator will support family members residing in shelter partner sites to navigate McKinney Vento rights, advocate for their children at school, and find resources to best support the academic growth of their children. They will coordinate round table discussions with parents to explore and introduce resources. The Family Support Coordinator will work with site coordinators to strengthen relationships with parents and create out-of-program whole family events.

The Family Support Coordinator will work 1-on-1 or in small groups with children, either in our program for grades K-5 or 6-8 at a homeless or domestic violence shelter on the south or west sides of Chicago M-Th evenings. They will be a member of a designated shelter site’s leadership team by helping students with homework, and individualized literacy time, guiding and orienting community volunteers, conducting reading assessments, and supporting Site Coordinators to lead the enrichment activity each day.

Mission Statement

Chicago HOPES for Kids provides comprehensive support to Chicago students and families experiencing homelessness. We are committed to our children’s educational development and long-term empowerment through academic support, dedicated mentorship and basic needs services. With over a decade of service, we are the only organization in Chicago that provides educational and specialized support directly to children experiencing homelessness. We proudly serve more than 325 students and their families annually and look forward to many more years of collaboration with our community!

Description

Children experiencing homelessness are at risk of falling 3 to 6 months behind in school with every move. At HOPES, we provide the necessary interventions to help students reach their full potential. Currently, our programs are in 10 shelters and community-based sites in Chicago! Neighborhoods we work in include: Rogers Park, Uptown, Lakeview, Austin, Englewood, South Shore, Back of the Yards and South Chicago.

Our Approach Makes a Difference:

  • We Provide Encouragement - Children thrive with guidance from caring adults. HOPES volunteers encourage children to be self-motivated and embrace challenge.
  • We Support Academic Success - Children experiencing homelessness are at risk of falling three-six months behind in school with every move. At HOPES, we provide the academic support needed to keep our kids on track.
  • We Engage Families - Strong families foster strong kids. We teach parents how to effectively advocate for their children in the public school system to help them better support their children's academic success long-term.
