South Fork American River Clean Up
Volunteers help to remove trash from the river and banks.

Join American River Conservancy for the 11th annual Great Sierra River Cleanup!

Did you know that it takes 450 years for a plastic beverage bottle to decompose? Don’t miss this year’s annual Great Sierra River CleanUp Day Saturday, September 21st! 8:30am to Noon with volunteer appreciation lunch to follow at Wakamatsu Farm.

We’ll cleanup various sites in the region including Hangtown Creek, South Fork American River, Traverse Creek, Cosumnes River and Folsom Reservoir.

Unlike our previous local South Fork American River Cleanups, this event doesn’t require any boating experience. Fun for the whole family!

The rivers of the Sierra Nevada region provide almost 65% of the state’s developed water needs on their way to the Pacific Ocean. Unfortunately, our waterways have historically been a dumping ground for waste. Together, we can help raise awareness about issues of watershed conservation, fighting litter, encouraging reduction of consumption and recycling, and promoting community pride.

In the words of Theresa Burgess, "The Great Sierra River Cleanup is the premier volunteer event focused on removing trash and restoring the health of waterways throughout the Sierra Nevada Region. This cleanup is an annual event coordinated by the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and held in conjunction with California Coastal Cleanup Day.The Great Sierra River Cleanup is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a day for Sierra communities - and those from all over California - to demonstrate their desire for clean water and healthy rivers. It’s an opportunity to learn about California’s water source and it’s a time to come together with your families, your neighbors, your community, and your friends to accomplish something vital and worthy on behalf of our great Sierra rivers."

The Great Sierra River CleanUp is a partner with California Coastal CleanUp Day. For 27 years, California Coastal CleanUp Day has been the state’s premier effort to involve the public in the stewardship of our coast, ocean and rivers. This year we are partnering with the local RCDs, Eldorado National Forest, CA State Parks, City of Placerville, the BLM and the Sierra Nevada Conservancy. Join us after the cleanup for a celebration with live music and great food! Sponsorship opportunities are available for this event.

Please contact Taylor Faye Benedict (530-621-1224 ex.25 or stewardship@arconservancy.org) at ARC if you’d like to sign up to volunteer for this event or donate goods/services to help make the cleanup a success!
