INTERNSHIP DESCRIPTION
Title: Public Relations and Social Media Intern
Employment Status: Part-time, Unpaid Internship
Department: Communications & Outreach
Reports to: Community Outreach Manager
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The Public Relations and Social Media Intern will report directly to the Community Outreach Manager and will have the opportunity to work in areas of social media, public relations, media relations, marketing and communications. This person must demonstrate organizational skills, strong writing skills, oral and written communication skills, attention to detail, knowledge and experience in social media including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, as well as an interest in learning about Habitat for Humanity’s mission and program. This is an unpaid internship, but Manatee County Habitat for Humanity will take any necessary steps with the educational institution in order to acquire college credit as compensation for the internship.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed at the start of each semester.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Social Media
- Develop regular updates and posts for Facebook, Instagram and Twitter
- Develop articles and content for Habitat’s e-newsletter
- Monitor content and requests on Habitat’s social media sites
- Create event listings on local calendars for Habitat for Humanity events
- Write press releases and story pitches for Habitat events, milestones and partnerships
- Track media coverage of Manatee County Habitat for Humanity by monitoring local publications and news-based websites
- Research media opportunities, reporters, and stories related to Habitat for Humanity and affordable housing
- Help manage and organize media contacts and distribution lists for press releases and announcements
- Assist in the development of new marketing materials including copy writing and copy editing
- Organize and select photos for marketing materials and the web
- Assist in managing the organization’s website - responsibilities include performing regular content audits and updating web pages as needed
- Provide administrative support in all areas of marketing and communications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

- Have an interest in Habitat for Humanity’s work and the nonprofit world
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:
- Must be currently in school, or a recent grad, for under grad or graduate degree in the field of public relations, marketing, advertising or a similar focus
- Proficient in Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel and Powerpoint
- Experience in social media sites including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY TO PERFORM THIS JOB:
- Most work is performed in an office setting at a desk
- Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods of time
- Ability to carry and transport display and presentation equipment
HOURS AND COMPENSATION:
- Internship duration is 4 months
- Weekly hour requirements are between 10-15 hours, to be conducted within the timeframe of a standard work week (Monday - Friday, 9am to 5pm)
- Manatee County Habitat for Humanity will take any necessary steps with the educational institution in order to acquire college credit as compensation for the internship
