Office Volunteers: Position Description: Office volunteers work Monday through Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. to help answer phones, gather intake information for case managers, work on the computer, inventory supplies, and run errands as needed. Office volunteers generally work four-hour shifts but shifts are flexible depending on your schedule. Any time you have to volunteer is very helpful! House Volunteers: Position Description: House Volunteers serve as a helpful presence in four-hour shifts after business hours, on weekends and during holidays. They may engage with residents as much or as little as they would like, although we encourage interaction with residents in some way, whether that be leading an optional workshop, providing a meal and conversation, or playing board games! Light responsibilities include answering the office phone, accepting and recording donations, assisting residents as needed, and the occasional organization project. Shifts are Mondays-Fridays 5-9 and Saturdays and Sundays 9-1, 1-5, and 5-9. You can sign up for whichever shifts work best for you. If you can only work part of a shift, that is very helpful, too! Other volunteer opportunities as needed: transportation volunteers, moving volunteers, life skills teachers, and craft/project teachers. Anyone who is interested in volunteering with FCWFS can contact volunteer coordinator Allison Crawford at acrawford@fcwfs.org. Thank you!

Mission Statement

The Franklin County Women and Family Shelter is an organization dedicated to providing shelter, services, and support to families with children and single women experiencing homelessness in Franklin County and surrounding communities. The shelter also provides direct assistance and referral services to community members who are at risk of homelessness.

Description

In the early 2000’s, Franklin County had an established shelter for homeless men, 18 years old and older; a homeless shelter for single women with children; and a domestic violence shelter - but no shelter services for homeless single women who were not homeless due to an active domestic violence situation. A group of Franklin County civic leaders and volunteers recognized the gap in shelter services for homeless single women and established the Franklin County Women and Family Shelter in 2004. Today, we are a 21-bed facility that can house 13 single women and two sets of couples with children or single men with children. Our staff of 4 includes a full-time social worker, a part-time executive director, a part-time house manager, and a part-time volunteer coordinator. Volunteers are crucial to fulfilling the mission of FCWFS to provide shelter, services, and support to community members experiencing homelessness.

In 2018, FCWFS housed 1 man with a child, 9 households with a man, woman, and children, and 53 single women. We also received 1,668 calls and completed 411 intake forms for clients requesting services or information.
