POSITION PROFILE: The Parent Child Home Program (PCHP) is a program designed to close the achievement gap by providing low-income families the skills and materials they need to prepare their children for school and life success. The Volunteer Early Literacy Specialist will be paired with 1-3 families to work with on a weekly basis.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Facilitate in-home positive parenting/early literacy activities with families to help encourage early learning for children ages 2-3.

· Ability to meet with each assigned family for 1 hour per week

· Ability to attend 2 day training program in mid-September

· Ability to meet with Program Coordinator and other volunteers 1 Saturday of each month for 1-2 hour monthly training and staff meeting

· Ability to commit to working with each family for 6-12 months with little disruption in schedule (i.e- taking a lot of personal time off, vacations, major sickness)

QUALIFICATIONS:

· Education & Experience:

o High School diploma

o Previous teaching experience preferred

o Experience working with children preferred

· Skill Requirements:

o Understanding of poverty, a high degree of maturity, strong inter-personal skills and the ability to work and communicate with low socio-economic and diverse parents and children in a professional and diplomatic manner

o Basic computer skills with access to a home/personal computer with internet access

· Physical Requirements:

o Ability to travel between assigned family homes
