Volunteer for Repatriation of Cultural Patrimony!

Repatriation of Cultural Patrimony ON OCTOBER 10, 2019 FROM 5~8 PM AT 333 South Halsted Street, Chicago, IL

Demands for repatriation of lost cultural patrimony and stolen human remains make weekly headlines around the world. Join the Chinese American Museum of Chicago, the Ethiopian Community Association of Chicago, the Mitchell Museum of the American Indian and the National Hellenic Museum in deepening your understanding of the complexities of repatriation in this panel discussion. Experts will share the history, repercussions in the community, and current repatriation efforts in Indigenous communities of the US and Canada, China, Greece, and Ethiopia. The discussion will be accompanied by a photographic pop-up exhibit showing how the demands for the return of lost cultural treasures can unite ethnicities and nationalities.

We hope to see you there as a volunteer or as an attendee!

Mission Statement

The Chicago Cultural Alliance's mission is to connect, promote, and support centers of cultural heritage for a more inclusive and culturally vibrant Chicago. We do this by facilitating intercultural collaboration and resource sharing within our membership, which is made up of centers of cultural heritage (Core Members) and partners ( Partner Members), in the greater arts and culture sector.

Description

The Chicago Cultural Alliance is a consortium of Chicago-area ethnic museums, cultural centers, and historical societies. Chicago is home to diverse communities, representing a broad spectrum of cultural heritage and identity that transcends geographic and political boundaries. We define cultural heritage as a legacy of tangible and intangible attributes that include monuments and objects, language, performing arts, social practices, rituals, festive events, and world knowledge passed from generation to generation.

The Alliance is the only organization of its kind in the U.S., representing Chicago-area heritage museums, cultural centers, and historical societies - our Core Members. Alliance Core Members serve 30+ diverse communities with populations ranging from 3,000 to more than one million, located in more than 24 neighborhoods and nine suburbs. Nearly 60% of Core Members are anchors for underserved and immigrant populations.
