Later this month, 500 youth poets and spoken word artists will be competing for the title of Grand Slam Champions at the 23rd Annual Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Competition. (www.bravenewvoices.org)

We are seeking healing professionals (social workers, peer counselors, therapists, healers, teachers, herbalists, folks who work closely with youth) to volunteer at this year’s Brave New Voices International Youth Poetry Slam Festival to provide on-site emotional and mental health support for young people who may be triggered, need to process with a caring adult, or seek additional mental health resources that can be best referred to by someone with a mental health background.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Attend mandatory, two-hour mental health volunteer training on Tuesday, July 16 on the UNLV campus
  • Provide emotional and mental health support to youth in the Festival’s designated Decompression Zone(s) by filling any number of shifts throughout the four days
  • Assist in decompression exercises with youth when needed (mindfulness meditation, deep breathing, etc.)
  • Provide one-on-one support for youth through talking and active listening
  • Guide youth through any additional resources they may need (i.e. hotline numbers, different therapeutic techniques to help address their symptoms, etc.)
There are 2 and 4-hour shifts over the course of the 4-day Festival. We need the most volunteers on Thu, 7/19, 6p-8p, Fri, 7/20 from 9a-11a, 11:30a-12:30p, and 6p-10p.
