ORGANIZATION: Hospice of the Chesapeake

Position Summary

To attend Honor Salutes as a Hospice of the Chesapeake Representative and assist Military Volunteers with tribute procedures

Responsibilities & Functions

* Respond to requests for Honor Salutes
* Arrive on time for scheduled visits; have positive interaction with those receiving service
* Complete volunteer visit progress note within 24 hours of visit
* Notify Volunteer Services of weekly schedule availability
* Attend at least one in-service training session annually
* Complete all required documentation annually (HIPAA/Patient Rights/PPD/Flu Shot)
* Contact Hospice of the Chesapeake Triage immediately to report: incidents, uncontrolled pain, breathing
problems, falls or any other concerns
* Retrieve Honor Salute kit from Pasadena or Largo Office, or alternative location (if needed)
* Transport military personnel to and from the assigned Honor Salute (if needed).
* Help to ensure that the Honor Salute flows appropriately (presentation by military:
certificate/pin/blanket/cards/slow salute)
* If comfortable, photograph the tribute (if applicable, make sure that photo release is signed by all participants in photos, including family, military etc.)
* Return photo release and photos to the Volunteer Coordinator following the Honor Salute


Establish and maintain good rapport with Hospice of the Chesapeake staff, volunteers, patients, and their families.
Supervised by: Veterans Volunteer Coordinator
Volunteers Supervised: Military Volunteers, please communicate any issues to the Volunteer Coordinator

Minimum Position Qualifications

Minimum education:
Hospice of the Chesapeake Patient Care Training
Required licensure or certification:
None required
Minimum experience:
None required
Skills required:
Dependability, flexibility, ability to work well with others, and understanding of hospice philosophy
Physical demands:
Must be able to drive
Equipment needed:
Car, Camera (if the volunteer owns one- NOT required)
Working conditions:
Patients’ place of residence

Roles, Responsibilities, Expectations

As a Medicare-certified hospice, we are mandated to include Volunteers as an important part of our organization. We are required to have at least 5% of our patient service hours provided by Volunteers.

Every year our Volunteers provide thousands of hours of service for our patients. The value of time is priceless in the eyes of our patients and their families.

Volunteer tasks can be patient related or non-patient related.
