Starting over is hard.

It's especially true for refugees who are unable return to the countries they fled due to war and fear of persecution. At Solutions in Hometown Connections (SHC), we make newcomers feel welcome through programs that teach and connect.

In-home Tutoring Program

Join the In-home Tutoring Program and help a refugee mom learn English. Tutors receive training, on-going support and join a community of 70 current tutors. The In-home Tutoring Program is a great opportunity for meaningful cross-cultural engagement.

To learn more about our Tutoring Program, please register at https://www.shconnections.org/volunteer-form.html for an upcoming information session.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Mission Statement

Engaging with refugees to build better communities.

Description

Who We Are

SHC's mission is to engage with refugees and immigrants to build better communities. SHC envisages a world where our communities are pathways to empowerment and thriving futures. SHC was founded in 2017 as a result of volunteer outreach to refugee families living in Maryland. It strives to provide refugee and immigrant families with the building blocks they need to access educational, vocational, and family programs. Through SHC, families receive English language instruction and educational programs, learn to navigate services, and get connected to a warm and inclusive community.

What We Do

SHC works with refugees and immigrants in Maryland, Virginia and Washington D.C. SHC supports individuals and their families through a network of mentors, tutors and community groups. SHC family friendly English Language Program eases family transition into new communities and builds confidence and independence.
