Uhuru Foods and Pies are looking for someone to fill our Head Baker position.

Summary of Qualifications:
Under the supervision of the Uhuru Pies Coordinator, the Head Baker is responsible for filling, baking and boxing Uhuru Pies to meet standards regarding consistency, appearance, flavor, accurate labeling of ingredients and on schedule. The Head Baker promotes Uhuru Foods & Pies as part of Black Star Industries, winning support for building an independent African economy and self-determination for African people.

Essential Functions:

  • Bake Uhuru Pies according to bake orders provided by the Uhuru Pies Coordinator.
  • Develop new products.
  • Bake high-quality pies consistently to standards of Uhuru Pies and manage quality control.
  • Work with the production manager and volunteer coordinator to produce and package pies with quality and on schedule.
  • Train, supervise and coordinate the work of the Assistant Baker(s) and Volunteer coordinator in assembly and pie filling and incorporate feedback from teams to improve the process.
  • Establish and reinforce best practices to maximize the efficient use of labor and materials throughout the production process.
  • Oversee quality control of the standards for filling the pie to produce desired end results and may correct the levels of pie filling as needed to produce uniform pies.
  • Manage the schedule by which pies are assembled and baked.
  • Responsible for baking pies at proper baking times, maintaining the temperature of ovens, rotation of pies and proper baking time to ensure that pies are properly baked and not over or under-cooked.
  • Maintain a clean workspace throughout the day and at the end of the shift.
  • Maintain health and safety standards in the kitchen according to Uhuru Foods & Pies protocol and those required by health departments and other public agencies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Other Characteristics:

  • Passionate about baking/cooking and working in a cooperative kitchen environment.
  • Leads and contributes to a positive, safe and effective work environment of all volunteers.
  • Delegates responsibilities clearly and in an organized manner.
  • Works collaboratively, team player.
  • Has the ability to lead and motivate others.
  • Able to prioritize tasks and manage time well under pressure.

Qualifications

  • Has professional baking experience or equivalent.
  • Has knowledge of professional baking and cooking equipment such as stand mixers and ovens.
  • Possesses a current food safety certificate or equivalent.
  • Must participate in one or more Uhuru Foods training.

Physical Requirements: Physical requirements include but are not limited to the lifting of up to 50 lbs.
