ORGANIZATION: The Gardens at Heather Farm

The Gardens at Heather Farm is a 6.5-acre public botanical garden and education center that enriches the community by providing a beautiful garden that is open to the public for free and educates both adults and children about being good stewards of the environment. We are located in Walnut Creek.

The Gardens at Heather Farm seeks Board members with a passion for gardening, supporting sustainable gardening practices and sharing educational opportunities about these practices with the community. We welcome individuals with integrity and a guiding vision to maintain the mission of the Gardens. To that end, the roles and functions of the Board of Directors of GHF are to:

Specific Responsibilities of Individual Board Members:

  • Attend board meetings regularly.
  • Be informed about GHF’s mission, services, policies, financial statements, and programs.
  • Review agenda and supporting materials before board and committee meetings.
  • Select the executive director and support him/her and review his/her performance.
  • Participate in planning for organizational effectiveness.
  • Carefully select, orient and involve new board members.
  • Participate in the Board’s self-evaluation.
  • Participate in solicitations for the Annual Fund Campaign.
  • Attend at least one program class or workshop at the GHF per year; assist as requested.
  • Volunteer to work in the Gardens at least twice per year.
  • Keep up to date on developments in the field that affects the GHF.
  • Represent the GHF to the public at internal, external, and related events.
  • Uphold exemplary standards of conduct and performance.
  • Understand the relationship between board and staff.
  • Make special requests of the staff through the Executive Director.
  • Ensure sound risk management.
  • Follow conflict of interest and confidentiality policies.


Board Member General Qualifications: Desired qualifications include: a) passionate about our mission, b) can lead committees, programs, or projects, c) have time available, d) can represent the organization in a professional manner, f) can work effectively with existing Board members, g) can commit to a two-year term.
