NAMI Colorado (The National Alliance on Mental Illness) provides advocacy, education, and support for individuals of all ages, their families, friends and loved ones impacted by serious and persistent mental illness.
Founded in 1980, NAMI Colorado developed as a grassroots effort in response to the de-institutionalization and imprisonment of people suffering from mental illness. Family members of adults released from institutions lacked sufficient knowledge and resources to assist their ill family members appropriately. In addition, community mental health centers had neither the expertise nor the funding to develop the necessary family support services they so needed. NAMI Colorado has worked tirelessly to fill in these gaps and complement existing services by providing FREE support and educational groups on how mental health issues impact us all today and what we can do finally do about them.
NAMI Colorado needs volunteers to answer phones, do light office work and simple data entry from 1-4 pm Monday- Friday excluding weekends and Holidays.We are needing people to train and start immediately!
Volunteers must have :
* Reliable transportation
* A productive and proactive work ethic
* Be comfortable working on a computer
* A desire and empathy for callers (Primarily family members, friends and relatives) who are being negatively impacted by people suffering from a mental illness. The phone person must be able to navigate a computer and help callers obtain resources and complete law line pre-screening intakes online.
* Are able to sit and work a 3 hour daily shift
* Have a willingness to be trainable and teachable
If you as a volunteer would like to work more than one shift, please let us know about your availability.

Mission Statement
The mission of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Colorado is to build communities of recovery and hope by educating, supporting, and advoating for individuals affected by mental illness and their families.
Description
NAMI Colorado was founded in 1981 as a grassroots response to the first waves of de-institutionalization that shifted care for seriously mentally ill men and women and children from hospitals to the community. Family members came together to help each other cope with the devastating effects of mental illness and to insure that their loved ones receive the services they need for recovery. The importance of these goals is as critical today as it was at our founding. Today NAMI Colorado supports a network of 18 affiliates and support groups around the state and has approximately 2,500 members. We are the Colorado state affiliate of the national NAMI organization.
