Volunteer with Behind the Book (www.behindthebook.org), a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs Pre-K-12th-grade classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing projects.

You need no experience or training. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work on their projects.

This writing workshop needs your help at a school in Mott Haven, Bronx, NYC. To sign up, contact volunteer@behindthebook.org with the program code and time slot(s) you choose.

Date/Time: Wednesday, July 24th / 10:30 - 11:30 AM and/or 11:30 AM - 12:30 PM

About the program: Seventh-graders will read Tight by Torrey Maldonado, a novel about a boy who must navigate through difficult choices compelled by family dynamics, friendships, and his desire for a different life. Students will work with coaches to edit their personal narratives about a time in their own lives when they had to make tough decisions.

Through our rich, innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula and meet Common Core Learning Standards, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms, where they teach a genre of writing and guide students in creating their own writing projects based on the theme of the author's book. BtB programs have a successful record of building comprehension skills and motivating engaged readers at schools around the city.
