If you believe that education is the path to a brighter future and want to create opportunities for an indigenous community in Guatemala to develop the skills needed to effect change in their lives, we have a chair for you at our boardroom table.

Our expectations are simple. Board members must:

  • Commit to a 3-year director term.
  • Commit to LHI’s vision, mission, and policies.
  • Attend 4 board meetings per year (via teleconference) and the annual board retreat (in-person in the U.S.).
  • Invest 3-10 hours/month to actively serve on at least one committee (governance, fundraising, programs and staffing, or finance).
  • Make LHI one of their top philanthropic priorities, including an annual gift that is personally significant.
  • Be an active spokesperson for LHI by raising awareness about, and funds for, LHI within their networks.

Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) is looking for passionate, talented and committed people to:

  • Lend their passion, skills, expertise, and connections to help deepen and scale our impact.
  • Collaborate with our board team to provide strategic leadership, secure funding, and set meaningful goals and effective policies.
  • Bring experience in a relevant area, such as non-profit governance, fundraising, marketing, communications, networking, strategic planning, organizational development, change and talent/growth management, risk management, and community, international, and/or youth development.

When you join the LHI board, you join a creative, passionate, and committed group of individuals with experience in a variety of fields. We have a high rate of board member satisfaction; 100% of our board members have renewed their initial 3-year term.

(Board members can be citizens/residents of any country.)

Mission Statement

At Limitless Horizons Ixil, we believe that education is the cornerstone of creating a brighter future, both for the individual and for the community. In supporting academic and personal development and cultivating literacy skills, we pave the way towards a future of limitless opportunities and broad new horizons for the Ixil community of Chajul.

Description

Limitless Horizons Ixil (LHI) is a non-religious, non-partisan Guatemala-based organization with legal status in Guatemala and 501(c)(3) status in the United States. LHI creates opportunities for the indigenous youth, women, and families of Chajul, Guatemala to develop the academic and professional skills needed to effect change in their lives and community. The heart of LHI consists of two main programs. Our Youth Development Program supports middle and high school education for youth who would not otherwise have the financial means to continue their education past primary school. The program provides youth with monthly scholarship payments and a comprehensive range of support services that foster personal and academic success, including: school supplies, tutoring, computer and Spanish language classes, a work-study program, career counseling, mentorship, and life-skills and leadership development workshops. As its second major program, LHI founded and operates Chajul’s first and only community library. Overall, both programs are designed to support education and literacy in the community by providing children and youth with the resources and support they need to attain academic success and personal development. LHI’s other major initiatives are a women’s artisan program and hosting service-learning trips to Chajul.
