Do you enjoy cooking? Do you like learning about history? Are you a food enthusiast who love to share and talk to others about food history, food preparation and processing? If so, we invite you to apply to become our docent for our fall exhibit Culinary Curiosity at the library.
Docents are life-long learners, educators, and ambassadors who share their passion for history and deliver accurate information. Docents encourage exploration and interpretation of the exhibit by engaging others in dialog and inquiry. They also provide an enjoyable and meaningful learning experience to the exhibit visitors. At AHML, Docents will be giving drop-in tours to the Culinary Curiosity exhibit to visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
Culinary Curiosity is an exhibit owned by the Kendall College Trust and it celebrates technical innovations in the world of food. It features historic objects from the 19th to 20th century from different parts of the world through the lens of food preparation techniques, including mixing, roasting, forming, and so on. The exhibit will be open on October 7th, 2019 - January 5th, 2020.
Duties
- Lead tours on the exhibit for which you are trained in a timely manner
- Interact with the general public in a positive and engaging manner
- Attend three required training sessions
- Complete required reading assignment
- Complete oral assignment
- Be comfortable with speaking and interacting with people of all ages and backgrounds
- Have a positive attitude
- Enjoy working in the public
- Be flexible with giving tours in various length depending on the visitors’ needs
- Adhere to the library policies, procedures, and guest-service standards
- Reliable, punctual and patient
- Experience in customer service, museums and galleries are preferred
Docents are expected to be available for minimum 15 two-hour shifts throughout the exhibit (October 7th, 2019 - January 5th, 2020) during the library’s opening hours with exception of holidays including Thanksgiving Eve, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve. Exact hours will be determined after the volunteer’s application is accepted.
Training
Qualified volunteer candidates are required to attend three training sessions, including a 90-minute lecture, a 2-hour practicum, and a 1-hour tour scheduled as follows:
- Lecture: Tuesday, October 8th at 2-3:30pm OR 5:30-7pm (Volunteers choose one to attend)
- Practicum: Thursday, October 10th at 10am-1pm OR Tuesday, October 15th at 1-4pm (Volunteer choose one to attend)
- Tour: Tuesday, November 5th at 10-11am (The tour will start at the library and end at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum which is across Vail Street by the library)
- The lecture and practicum will focus on Culinary Curiosity exhibit, and the tour will focus on A Pop of Local Flavor: The Sweet Story of Arlington Club special display by the Arlington Heights Historical Museum at the library.
