While most of us are feeling lonely while practicing physical distancing during COVID-19, those with a diagnosed mental health condition are at greater risk of isolation. You have the power to make a difference in someone’s life simply by making a phone call once a week.
Compeer serves individuals living with a mental illness (such as depression or anxiety). Our participants manage their diagnosis with clinical support and are looking to increase their social support by participating in the Compeer program.
We have many adult and older adult clients who would love a phone call every week! As a phone buddy, you get to build a friendship with one of our participants over the phone. 15-20 minute conversations weekly give our friends something positive to look forward to and a consistent, caring adult presence in their life.
Mentors must be 18 years of age, live in New York State (for background check purposes) and complete a screening process requiring reference checks and a background check, which includes fingerprinting.
How to get started:
- Schedule a 15-minute inquiry call with the Director of Volunteer Engagement. You may schedule a call here.

Mission Statement
Promoting good mental health through meaningful friendships.
Description
Compeer Buffalo operates four core programs, each focusing on friendship and supportive relationships to encourage mental wellness. These include one-on-one volunteer mentoring, group mentoring social activities, school-based mentoring, and Mental Health Education (including the evidenced based curriculum for Mental Health First Aid). Volunteers become positive role models, help raise self-esteem, increase social and communication skills, and encourage independence for their Compeer friends. The relationship between volunteers and their friends encourages a sense of belonging, trust, respect, hope, support, and empowerment.
The Compeer model of one-to-one support is an evidenced based program that was recognized in 2007 by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) - a branch of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services - as an evidenced based program under the National Registry of Evidenced based Programs and Practices (NREPP).
