The Conservation Research Volunteers (CRVs) are trained to conduct animal behavior research on captive wildlife at the zoo. Animal behavior and conservation research at the zoo will help answer important questions and is being conducted at Micke Grove Zoo to improve the health and welfare of our captive wildlife. CRVs will trained by the Zoo Curator in behavioral observation and documentation skills and will have the exciting opportunity to observe, document and record the unique behaviors of our zoo animal ambassadors. Training will occur prior to conducting research. They will be assisting the Curator with data collection.
DUTIES (all volunteers will be trained prior to data collection):
1.Learn behavioral methodologies and practical training methods
2.Assess body condition and other animal welfare indicators
3.Document behavioral parameters for the assigned sampling periods
4.Catalogue data collected in files for analysis
5.Assist with data analysis and design graphs
6.Document unique behaviors and changes in behavioral patterns
CRVs will be provided the opportunity to:
1.Work side by side with the Zoo Curator during training sessions
2.Learn about the natural history and individual history of the collection
3.Learn more about animal behavior and welfare and factors that influence the display of natural behaviors
4.Gain a better understanding about how wildlife behave in social groups
5.Gain a better understanding in conducting animal behavior research and data analysis
REQUIREMENTS
Must have:
1.A strong commitment to supporting the zoo’s goals in conservation and behavior/ welfare research.
2.A positive demeanor
3.The ability to be focused and detail oriented
4.A positive work ethic
5.Team work ability
6.A negative tuberculin (TB) skin test (or lung x-ray) results.

Description
Micke Grove Zoo is a captive wildlife center that is owned and run by a County government in California. This facility breeds threatened wildlife in captivity to support their conservation. Conservation education programs are conducted at the zoo to promote local knowledge on wildlife conservation. Volunteers are trained at this facility and some of them are hired on a regular basis.

REQUIREMENTS
- Must be at least 18
- Orientation or Training
- Available to volunteer at least 1. one 4-hour shift per week - either 8:30 A.M to 12:30 P.M. or 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., and 2. for a minimum of 6 months.
- Able to work outdoors in the summer heat, and 2. Must have a negative tuberculin (TB) skin test (or lung x-ray) result conducted within the last two years.
