On Sunday, September 8th, the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis (CF) Foundation will hold its 7 th annual CF Cycle for Life event. CF Cycle for Life challenges cyclists to ride 15, 30 or 60 miles through the beautiful terrain of Allegheny and Butler Counties, from North Park to Moraine State Park. It is not a competitive race but rather a fundraising ride.

Our ride benefits the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and the CF community. We pride ourselves on serving as the world’s leader in the search for a cure to Cystic Fibrosis. CF is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of about 30,000 children and adults in the United States and 70,000 worldwide. A defective gene and its protein product causes the body to produce unusually thick mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. The Foundation’s mission is to find a cure for CF and to improve the quality of life for people living with the disease. We accomplish this by funding life-saving research and working to provide access to quality care and effective therapies for people with CF.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is to cure cystic fibrosis and to provide all people with the disease the opportunity to lead full, productive lives by funding research and drug development, promoting individualized treatment and ensuring access to high-quality, specialized care.

Description

Cystic fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time.

In people with CF, a defective gene causes a thick, buildup of mucus in the lungs, pancreas and other organs. In the lungs, the mucus clogs the airways and traps bacteria leading to infections, extensive lung damage and eventually, respiratory failure. In the pancreas, the mucus prevents the release of digestive enzymes that allow the body to break down food and absorb vital nutrients.

People with cystic fibrosis are at greater risk of getting lung infections because thick, sticky mucus builds up in their lungs, allowing germs to thrive and multiply. Lung infections, caused mostly by bacteria, are a serious and chronic problem for many people living with the disease. Minimizing contact with germs is a top concern for people with CF.
