Join Rock Creek Conservancy and the National Park Service as we remove invasive Mile-a-Minute vines from Peggy Fleming’s Meadow at Military Road and Oregon Ave/Glover Road.

Peggy Fleming’s Meadow is a haven for Milkweed. This native plant so vital to the Monarch butterfly’s life cycle, is threatened by non-native and invasive Mile-a-Minute vines in the meadow and along the forest fringe. Hopefully we’ll see plenty of Monarchs lightly flitting from flower to flower when we’re working.

This is our second event this month to put the brakes on this speedy plant. We hope to see you there!

You MUST register for this event: see registration link above

Volunteer Activity: Volunteers will help remove invasive Mile-a-Minute vines overtaking Milkweed at Peggy Fleming’s Meadow. We will also remove Porcelainberry and Bittersweet vines from overtaking new and mature trees at the edge of the forest.

When: Saturday, June 29, 2019, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm

Where: Volunteers will meet at Peggy Fleming’s Meadow at Military & Glover Roads / Oregon Ave., across from St. John’s near the Rock Creek Nature Center (5200 Glover Rd NW DC). There is a parking lot at Grove 13 on Glover Road next to the Meadow as well as the Nature Center. Volunteers are encouraged to carpool, bike, or use public transportation. The D31, D33, D34, E4 and W45 busses run near the site.

What to Wear: Please dress appropriately for the weather. Wear sturdy boots or sneakers. We recommend long pants and sleeves to prevent contact with poison ivy. We also encourage volunteers to wear a hat.

What to Bring: Bring water and snacks if you want them. Tools, gloves, and water will be provided. Feel free to bring your own tools and gloves if you have them. Students can earn SSL hours, but please bring needed forms.

Leader Contact Information: John Burwell, pinehurstprojectdc@gmail.com, 202-491-6555
