Please lend a hand to Mittens for Detroit as we kick off our 10th Collection Season! You'll be celebrating 10 years of warmth, as you help to get thousands of new mittens and gloves onto thousands of hands! Mittens for Detroit collects thousands of pairs of new mittens and gloves every year, for distribution to children and adults in Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Dearborn. In order to process these tens of thousands of pairs, we need many volunteers to lend a hand in The Big Sort!
The Big Sort is a series of sorting events that occur from November 11th to March 31st this year. Dates are set up at the convenience of the volunteer group, who will to come to our office to sort, count, and pack the collections of pairs that come in, so that the agencies can come to pick up their boxes. The work is mostly inside, except for when we take the boxes to the curb to meet the school/agency representatives and have them receive their boxes of mittens and gloves. There is some lifting possible, and there are also accommodations for those who have limited mobility.
This is a TEAM event, with your group having between 5 - 20 people from your office, community group, sorority, company, sports or dance team, and the like. This is a great team-building experience! This is not an individual person opportunity at this point. This is a great opportunity for office groups, community service organizations, and the like. Participant minimum age is 18 years old. Please contact Wendy if you have any questions. Again, this is not a volunteer for an individual.
No additional volunteer opportunities at this time.

Mittens for Detroit collects, purchases, and distributes new, unused mittens and gloves for children, teens and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved communities. Pairs are collected from public donation and distributed through partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters, and the like. This is our 10th Collection Season!
Founded in 2010, Mittens for Detroit is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that collects, purchases, and distributes new mittens and gloves for children and adults in need in Detroit, Michigan and other underserved cities. From October 1st through January 31st each year, pairs are donated in public and private collections. These are then sorted, counted, and packed by amazing volunteers in The Big Sort. Partner agencies, organizations, schools, shelters and the like then pick up their boxes of pairs for distribution to their guests, families, students, residents, and so on.
In our first nine years, Mittens for Detroit collected and distributed one-quarter million pairs of new mittens and gloves.
