If you are interested in criminal and social justice reform, then this volunteer opportunity is for you! Gideon’s Promise envisions a nation where every person has access to zealous, outstanding representation necessary to ensure "equal justice for all" in the criminal justice arena. You will have an opportunity to meet and work with the Gideon’s Promise Community, which includes public defenders from across the country, our own staff, and nationally-recognized panelists in the field of indigent defense.

We need 45 volunteers to assist with mock voir dire workshops. Voir dire is the process by which prospective jurors are questioned about their backgrounds and potential biases before being chosen to sit on a jury. During the simulated voir dire workshop, our volunteers will service as potential jurors as our public defenders enhance their skills with the voir dire process.

Volunteers are needed 4.5 hours:

  • Monday 8/12/19 volunteers are needed during the hours of 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

* There will be a 1-hour orientation provided at 1:00 p.m. on Monday August 12, 2019 at Atlanta Metropolitan State College 1630 Metropolitan Parkway SW, Atlanta, GA 30310 This will be a great opportunity to students interested in a career in law or others interested in finding out more about the jury selection process.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to transform the criminal justice system by building a movement of public defenders who provide equal justice for marginalized communities.

Description

WE ARE THE VOICE FOR THE VOICELESS In 1963, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in Gideon v. Wainright that state courts are required under the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution to provide counsel in criminal cases to represent defendants who are unable to afford to pay their own attorneys. That same year, the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom took place in our nation’s capitol. Both occurrences marked a monumental shift towards equality in the justice system and social infrastructure in our country.

Although 1963 was a pivotal year for civil and human rights, our jails and prisons are still populated with people who are not receiving quality representation due to financial, structural and cultural changes needed in the criminal justice system. Many people in the system are overwhelmingly poor and disproportionately minorities. For them, Gideon’s promise remains unfulfilled and justice out of reach.

Public defenders are necessary if we are to realize equal justice in America. We are the voice for the voiceless.
