Literacy Volunteers of Wayne County

As a tutor, you will help our learners improve their ability to speak, read, and write. All of our learners are adults who are striving to develop their literacy skills. You can provide tangible benefits to Wayne County by helping our learners get their driver license, get their High School Equivalency, gain citizenship, or even gain employment!

For some learners, math will be a component of their tutoring. Often, our learners are starting developing their most basic math skills, such as addition, subtraction, fractions, and decimals. We can even help you brush up on topics before you begin teaching your student.

Tutors do not need to have prior experience as an educator. We will provide the training necessary to become an effective tutor. We want volunteers from all walks of life; our students are diverse, so we want our tutors to be diverse too!

Most tutors work one-on-one with a learner. This allows lessons to focus on the learner’s needs and goals. Tutoring occurs in convenient public locations, such as libraries. We match learners and tutors based on availability and town of residence.

New Tutor Orientation is required for this opportunity, which involves online educational sessions and a face-to-face intake meeting.
